FAQs

Is this my exact tax bill?

No. It’s an estimate using CRA payroll deduction methodology and standard credits; returns can differ due to other income and credits.

What’s the difference between gross income and taxable income?

Taxable income is gross income minus deductions like RRSP and eligible expenses.

Do CPP and EI reduce income tax?

They don’t reduce taxable income, but they increase non-refundable credit bases that reduce tax payable.

What is the Canada Employment Amount (CEA)?

A non-refundable credit for employment income; for 2026 it’s the lesser of $1,501 and employment income.

Why does Ontario show a health premium?

Ontario applies a health premium based on taxable income, up to $900.

What is Ontario surtax and when does it apply?

Ontario surtax applies when basic provincial tax exceeds certain thresholds (e.g., $5,818 and $7,446 in 2026).

I live in Quebec—why is this different?

Quebec residents receive a federal abatement (16.5%), and Quebec provincial tax is administered separately; use manual parameters for QC.

Why might my paycheck withholding differ from this annual estimate?

Payroll withholding uses per-pay-period calculations and TD1 claims; annual totals can differ due to timing and other income/credits.

Can I use this for self-employment income?

Not accurately by default—self-employed CPP rules differ and more deductions may apply.
