This calculator estimates sales tax in Canada for a purchase in any province/territory: GST (5%), HST (where applicable), and PST/QST (where applicable). You only need the province/territory, amount, and whether the price is before tax or tax-included. GST is 5% federally. HST applies in participating provinces (Ontario 13%, New Brunswick 15%, Newfoundland & Labrador 15%, Prince Edward Island 15%, Nova Scotia 14%). Some provinces use GST plus a separate PST/QST (e.g., BC 7% PST, Saskatchewan 6% PST, Manitoba 7% RST, Quebec 9.975% QST). Both GST and PST/QST are calculated on the same pre-tax base (and QST is calculated on the selling price excluding GST). Verified January 28, 2026. Informational estimate only; receipts can differ slightly due to rounding.

FAQs

Is GST always 5% in Canada?

Yes, GST is 5% federally. Total tax can be higher due to HST or provincial taxes.

What’s the difference between GST and HST?

HST combines GST with a provincial component in participating provinces (e.g., Ontario and Atlantic provinces).

Do I pay PST everywhere in Canada?

No. Some provinces use HST, some use separate PST/RST, and some have GST only.

In BC/Manitoba/Saskatchewan, is GST calculated on top of PST?

Generally, GST is calculated on the price without PST (both use the same pre-tax base).

In Quebec, is QST calculated on the price including GST?

QST is calculated on the selling price excluding GST.

My total is tax-included—how do you reverse the tax?

Divide the total by (1 + total tax rate) to get the base, then compute GST/HST and PST/QST from that base.

What does zero-rated mean?

Zero-rated supplies are taxable at 0%—no GST/HST is charged but they remain taxable supplies.

What does exempt mean?

Exempt supplies are not subject to GST/HST, and businesses generally can’t claim ITCs on related purchases.

Why might my result differ from a receipt by $0.01?

Receipts often round tax per line item; calculators may round after totals.

Which province’s rate should I use for online orders?

Use place-of-supply rules, typically based on the delivery destination.
