Examples

Resident with deductions (2025–26)
Gross $90,000, deductions $5,000 → taxable $85,000; tax ≈ $16,288 + Medicare levy $1,700 → total $17,988.
Low income with LITO (2025–26)
Gross $30,000, deductions $0 → LITO reduces tax; Medicare levy applies in phase-in range.
Estimate Australian individual income tax from your income and deductions, then add Medicare levy (2%) and, if relevant, Medicare levy surcharge (MLS) when you don’t have appropriate hospital cover and your income exceeds thresholds. You’ll need your gross income, deductions, and whether you’re a tax resident, non-resident, or working holiday maker. Australia’s financial year runs 1 July to 30 June. This calculator supports 2025–26 and 2024–25 rates, resident vs non-resident vs WHM tables, LITO and optional SAPTO, Medicare levy reductions, and MLS tiers. Verified January 28, 2026. Informational estimate only—actual ATO assessments may differ due to offsets, MLS income rules, and rounding.

FAQs

Do I need to pick 2025–26 or 2024–25?

Choose the year you earned the income in (Australia’s year is 1 Jul–30 Jun).

Does this include the Medicare levy?

Yes—when Medicare levy is on, it adds the standard 2% with low-income reductions.

I’m a non-resident. Do I get the $18,200 tax-free threshold?

No—non-resident tax rates start from the first dollar and use different brackets.

What’s the difference between gross income and taxable income?

Taxable income is gross income minus deductions.

Why is my income tax $0 even though I earned more than $18,200?

Residents can also get LITO, which can reduce income tax further at low incomes.

What is MLS and when does it apply?

MLS is an extra 1%–1.5% charge if you don’t have suitable hospital cover and your income is above MLS thresholds.

I have private extras cover only—does that avoid MLS?

Generally no; MLS relates to having appropriate private hospital cover.

Why is WHM tax different?

Working holiday makers are taxed under a special table and don’t get the resident tax-free threshold.

Does this calculator tell me my refund?

No—refunds depend on how much PAYG was withheld versus your final assessed tax.
