Formula
Step 1 — Annualize: annual regular gross = (monthly gross + taxable benefits) × 12. Annual special gross = 13th + 14th. Step 2 — Employee SV: apply employee SV rates to monthly base (capped) and special payments (annual cap). Unemployment rate is reduced for lower monthly bases. Step 3 — Regular taxable income: annual regular gross − regular SV − Werbungskostenpauschale (€132) − Pendlerpauschale − other deductions, plus any special payments exceeding Jahressechstel. Step 4 — Wage tax (tariff): apply 2026/2025 brackets to regular taxable income. Step 5 — Credits: subtract Verkehrsabsetzbetrag, Pendlereuro, Family Bonus Plus, Unterhaltsabsetzbetrag, and other credits (tax cannot go below zero). Step 6 — Special payments tax: privileged special payments (up to Jahressechstel) are taxed at fixed rates after SV and €620 allowance; excess special payments are taxed like regular income.

This calculator estimates your Austrian take-home pay (net) from a gross salary, showing employee social security deductions, income tax brackets, and wage tax (Lohnsteuer). It supports 13th/14th salary (special payments), Pendlerpauschale + Pendlereuro, and common family tax credits. Best for employees paid via Austrian payroll (ASVG). You’ll need your gross salary, whether you receive 13th/14th salary, and any commuter/family credits. Verified / checked: 29 Jan 2026. Rates shown are for tax year 2026 by default; you can switch to 2025. Important: Informational estimate—your payslip can differ due to payroll rounding, sector rules, allowances, multi-employer situations, and which credits your employer applies during the year.

FAQs

Is this for employees or self-employed people?

Employees paid through payroll (Lohnsteuer). Self-employed taxes and social security follow different rules.

Does it include the 13th and 14th salary?

Yes—enter both amounts. They’re taxed with fixed rates up to the Jahressechstel and otherwise taxed like regular pay.

How are 13th/14th taxed in Austria?

There’s a €620 allowance, then fixed bands (6% / 27% / 35.75%) for privileged special payments.

What is the Jahressechstel (and why does it matter)?

It’s the limit up to which special payments get the privileged fixed-rate taxation. With stable pay it’s roughly two monthly salaries.

What if my income is high—do social security deductions stop increasing?

Yes. Employee SV is capped by a monthly maximum contribution base and a separate annual cap for special payments.

How does Pendlerpauschale affect my pay?

It reduces taxable income, and it enables the Pendlereuro credit which reduces tax directly.

What is the Pendlereuro in 2026?

From 2026 it’s €6 per km per year (one-way distance), pro-rated if you commute fewer days per month.

Can I apply Family Bonus Plus in payroll?

Yes, it can be considered by your employer (with the right form) or claimed via the annual tax return.

Why can my tax be lower than expected in some months?

Credits and special-payment months can shift withholding. Payroll also recalculates when conditions change.

Do you include the standard work-expense lump sum automatically?

Yes—employees get the €132/year Werbungskostenpauschale built into wage tax calculations.

What is the child support credit (Unterhaltsabsetzbetrag) in 2026?

€38/month for the first child supported, €56 for the second, €75 for the third and each additional supported child (conditions apply).
